Kevin Großkreutz: Borussia Dortmund needs to be more than just a stepping stone for players
Kevin Großkreutz wants his former club Borussia Dortmund to be more than just a stepping stone for players ‘who only want to stay for two years’.
The 2021/22 season has certainly not gone according to plan for Borussia Dortmund. The Black and Yellows have failed to meet expectations this season, and those in charge now face some difficult decisions heading into the summer transfer window.
Kevin Großkreutz thinks that Borussia Dortmund need to start being more than just a stepping stone for young players who will only stay at the club for a couple of years. The former BVB right-back also wants Sebastian Kehl and co. to overhaul the squad and make four or five new signings in the upcoming transfer window.
"“There has to be a shake-up,” Großkreutz said on the ran Bundesliga Webshow. “I hope that my friend Sebastian Kehl does a good job. I would like to see four or five new players, and possibly two or three players from our own youth team.”“Marco Reus and Mats Hummels have to stay. They know how Dortmund plays and what makes people tick here. We need to be more than a stepping stone for players who only want to stay for two years.”"
Borussia Dortmund have already made one summer signing, with Niklas Süle set to arrive on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. BVB are also closing in on the signing of Karim Adeyemi, and are in talks with SC Freiburg centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck. Signing a new defensive midfielder is also said to be on the club’s agenda for the summer.
Großkreutz also believes that Borussia Dortmund need to start being more consistent on the pitch if they want to have any chance of competing with Bayern Munich next season. “Dortmund has to be consistent if it wants to be a threat to Bayern,” Großkreutz said.
Inconsistent performances (along with injuries) have been the theme of Borussia Dortmund’s season. Head coach Marco Rose has also come under fire for some of the team’s disappointing performances. But Großkreutz feels that the 45 year old deserves the chance to lead the team to success next season.
