Lennard Maloney will leave Borussia Dortmund and join 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim when his contract expires at the end of the season.

2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Heidenheim have announced that Lennard Maloney will be joining them on a free transfer in the summer. The American defender’s contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire at the end of the season, and he has signed a three year contract with Heidenheim.

Maloney joined Borussia Dortmund in 2020 from Union Berlin. The 22 year old has been a regular starter for BVB II since his move, and also helped them win promotion from the Regionalliga West to the 3. Liga last season. He has been a regular starter for the BVB U-23s in the 3. Liga this season, and has made 24 appearances for them.

Maloney made his Borussia Dortmund first-team debut earlier this season during the win over Arminia Bielefeld. He got another opportunity in the first-team in March, as he came off the bench and helped BVB see out a 1-0 win at home against Arminia Bielefeld.

The defender is now set for a new adventure with 1. FC Heidenheim, who are currently eighth in the 2. Bundesliga standings. They came close to winning promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season, but ended up losing to Werder Bremen on away goals in the promotion/relegation playoff tie.
