Hertha Berlin looking to keep Marcel Lotka at the club despite his move to Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund completed the signing of young goalkeeper Marcel Lotka in March. But Hertha Berlin are now looking to keep him at the club beyond the end of the season by using a clause in his contract.
Just days after making his Bundesliga debut for Hertha Berlin, Marcel Lotka completed his move to Borussia Dortmund. The young goalkeeper’s contract with the capital club is set to expire at the end of the season, and the Black and Yellows moved quickly to sign him for the U-23s team in March.
Lotka began the season as Hertha’s fifth-choice goalkeeper, and spent the first half of the season playing in the Regionalliga (fourth division of German football). He only got his maiden first-team opportunity due to a personnel shortage. But the 20 year old has taken big strides in his development since his debut, and has quickly established himself at the club with impressive performances between the sticks.
Now Hertha want to keep Lotka in Berlin, even though both clubs announced the goalkeeper’s move to Borussia Dortmund in March. According to BILD and Ruhr Nachrichten, there is said to be a clause in the Polish goalkeeper’s contract that could help Hertha keep him at the club.
Kicker go in more detail about the clause, reporting that the Berliners pulled their option to extend Lotka’s expiring contract by one year before the deadline on April 30.
However, it still remains to be seen if the clause is legally valid or not. Ruhr Nachrichten add that Borussia Dortmund are currently expecting Lotka to join the club in the summer as planned. But the two clubs are in contact, and the issue is not expected to be fully resolved until after the end of the season.
Lotka has made eight appearances for Hertha Berlin so far this season. He is set to go up against his future employers at the Signal Iduna Park on the final matchday of the season.
