Dan-Axel Zagadou to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season
Dan-Axel Zagadou will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, incoming sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed.
Dan-Axel Zagadou’s contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire this summer, and head of players department Sebastian Kehl has now confirmed that he will not be signing an extension. The Frenchman will play his final game for the Black and Yellows this weekend against Hertha Berlin.
Kehl told Ruhr Nachrichten that the two parties held a very open conversation and came to the decision not to extend the defender’s contract. “Daxo was with us for a very long time, he is a great person and a great footballer. We wish him all the best,” Kehl added.
Zagadou joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer from Paris St. Germain in 2017 and has made a total of 91 appearances for the club. He has been forced to deal with a number of injury problems over the course of his BVB career.
According to Transfermarkt, Zagadou has missed a total of 83 games due to injuries over the last five years. And it is this susceptibility to injuries that prompted the BVB bosses to decide against renewing his contract.
Borussia Dortmund have also signed Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of next season. So Zagadou would have found playing time hard to come by next season even if he did sign a contract extension with the club.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Dan-Axel Zagadou. But he is still only 22 and has great potential. There is no doubt that he can develop into a quality defender if he manages to steer clear of injuries for an extended period of time.
