Michael Zorc is set to call time on his 44-year long spell with Borussia Dortmund this weekend, and Marco Rose paid tribute to him on Thursday.
Michael Zorc is a name that has been synonymous with Borussia Dortmund over the last four decades. The 59 year old has been the club’s sporting director for the last 24 years, but before that he enjoyed a glittering playing career spanning two decades with the Black and Yellows.
Zorc is set to bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund this weekend, as he will retire at the end of the season. And head coach Marco Rose paid tribute to him on Thursday. During his press conference ahead of BVB’s Bundesliga clash against Hertha BSC, Rose said that Zorc’s presence will be missed at the club.
"“Zorci was not only the sporting director, but also a very successful player. He has shaped an era. No one knows the club better and no one lives the club more. On top of that, he is a very calm and pleasant guy. You can see his experience. I think we will certainly miss him.”"
Hans-Joachim Watzke also praised Zorc, and said that Borussia Dortmund owes ‘Susi’ a huge debt of gratitude.
"“BVB owes Michael a huge debt of gratitude,” Watzke told SID. “He has had the greatest career of any Borussian. 44 years at his club in his city – that’s as good as it gets.”"
Zorc joined Borussia Dortmund all the way back in 1978, and went on to make his first-team debut just three years later. He quickly became an influential player in the middle of the park for his hometown club, and made a club record 572 appearances for the Black and Yellows.
Zorc led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, the UEFA Champions League and the Club World Cup as a player. And after retiring as a player, he was appointed the club’s sporting director.
As sporting director, Zorc helped Borussia Dortmund win three Bundesliga titles and three DFB-Pokal titles. He leaves Borussia Dortmund as the longest-serving sports director in German football.
Zorc is a Borussia Dortmund legend in every sense of the word, and his contributions to the club’s success will certainly never be forgotten.
