Hamburger SV will face Hertha Berlin in the relegation play-off, as they look to join Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen in winning promotion to the Bundesliga next season.

The 2. Bundesliga season came to an end on Sunday, and once again the final day of the season produced plenty of drama. Having already won promotion, Schalke 04 secured the second division title with a 2-1 win away to FC Nürnburg.

Borussia Dortmund’s arch-rivals will be back in the Bundesliga next season, and fans of both clubs can look forward to the Revierderby again.

Werder Bremen also secured promotion to the Bundesliga on Sunday after claiming a 2-0 win at home to SSV Jahn Regensburg. Just one season after being relegated, Die Werderaner have secured their return to the top flight. Ole Werner’s side finished second in the 2. Bundesliga standings, two points behind Schalke 04.

Werder Bremen have former Borussia Dortmund players Ömer Toprak and Leonardo Bittencourt in their squad, and the former is also the club captain.

Hertha Berlin slipped into the relegation playoff spot on goal difference following VfB Stuttgart’s 92nd minute winner against FC Köln on the final day of the season. It has been a disastrous season so far for Hertha. And relegation to the second division would be an unthinkable scenario for a club that had dreams of qualifying for Europe not long ago.
