Reports in Köln claim that Borussia Dortmund will have to pay a transfer fee of just six million euros for the signature of defensive midfielder Salih Özcan.

Borussia Dortmund are set to complete the signing of Salih Özcan from FC Köln. The defensive midfielder underwent his medical check in Dortmund on Thursday, and the transfer will likely be made official very soon.

The Black and Yellows will reportedly only have to pay a transfer fee in the region of 5.5-6 million euros for the signature of Özcan due to an exit clause in his contract. This is being reported by Köln based newspapers Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Express. BILD had earlier claimed that Borussia Dortmund would have to pay a transfer fee of ten million euros to sign Özcan.

Both Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Express add that Özcan will earn an annual salary of around five million euros at BVB.

If the report of the release clause is indeed true, then Özcan presents a real bargain for Borussia Dortmund. The 24 year old was one of the top defensive midfielders in the Bundesliga this season, and played a vital role in helping Köln qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

With Axel Witsel leaving this summer, signing a new defensive midfielder was high on Borussia Dortmund’s list of priorities. And in Özcan, they have found a number six who is dependable and already proven in the Bundesliga.

Özcan will undoubtedly bring more robustness and physicality to Borussia Dortmund’s midfield, which is something that has been missing since Thomas Delaney’s departure.
