Borussia Dortmund internationals: Defeat for Jude Bellingham, draw for Niklas Süle, win for Salih Özcan
There were mixed fortunes for the three Borussia Dortmund players in action for their respective national teams on Saturday.
The UEFA Nations League continued on Saturday, with England going up against Hungary in Budapest. Jude Bellingham was named in the England starting XI, but he wasn’t able to prevent them from suffering a 1-0 defeat.
England dominated the game and created a host of decent chances, but did not look to be at their very best. And their efforts were undone in the 66th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai gave Hungary the shock lead from the penalty spot. The RB Leipzig midfielder’s goal was enough to give Hungary their first win over England in 60 years.
In the same Nations League group, Germany and Italy played out a 1-1 draw with Joshua Kimmich canceling out Lorenzo Pellegrini’s opener. After a goalless but eventful first half, Pellegrini opened the scoring for the Euro 2020 winners in the 70th minute. But their joy was short-lived, as Kimmich scored the equaliser just three minutes later.
New Borussia Dortmund signing Niklas Süle played 90 minutes for Germany, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Julian Brandt were both unused substitutes. Karim Adeyemi was not included in the squad, and Marco Reus missed the game due to illness.
England and Germany are set to face off in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday, and Reus is expected to be available for that game.
Salih Özcan came off the bench as Turkey cruised to a 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands on Saturday. The Borussia Dortmund defensive midfielder was subbed on in the 66th minute and helped Turkey see out the comfortable win.
