French side Olympique Marseille are said to be in talks to sign Axel Witsel, who will leave Borussia Dortmund when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Axel Witsel is set to leave Borussia Dortmund this month after a four year spell with the Black and Yellows. A number of clubs are interested in signing the Belgian international on a free transfer. And L’Equipe claim that Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille are hoping to sign him as a replacement for the Aston Villa-bound Boubacar Kamara.

Witsel is said to be Olympique Marseille’s top target for defensive midfield, and L’Equipe claim that talks are already underway between the two parties. But there is plenty of interest in the 33 year old, and Marseille are reportedly set to face competition from Atletico Madrid, as well as clubs from Germany. The report adds that Witsel has already rejected a move to Qatar, as he wants to stay in Europe.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Axel Witsel, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian in 2018. The defensive midfielder recently said that he wants to continue to play at the highest level with the FIFA World Cup coming up. He also said in May that he will not be making a return to the Belgian Pro League just yet.

Witsel was a vital cog in midfield for the majority of his Borussia Dortmund career and made a total of 145 appearances for the club. But now a new chapter awaits him this summer.
