Matthias Sammer has admitted that both the club and the player are to blame for the uncertainty surrounding Youssoufa Moukoko’s future. But he remains hopeful that the young striker will stay at Borussia Dortmund.
Youssoufa Moukoko’s future at Borussia Dortmund has come under a bit of doubt in recent months, with less than one year left on his current contract with the club. The BVB bosses have stated that they would like to extend the highly rated striker’s contract, but the two parties have yet to reach an agreement over a new contract.
There have also been claims that Moukoko wants to leave Borussia Dortmund. And Matthias Sammer, who is an external advisor at BVB, has now admitted that both the club and the player could have done a better job of handling the situation. In an interview with Kicker, the 1996 Ballon d’Or winner said:
"“He is still very young, and we as a club could perhaps have signaled to him more in the past that he can be an important factor in the team. On the other hand, it doesn’t make sense for him to flirt with a transfer either. There should be a mutual appreciation – and that is what is going to happen in the near future.”“The player and the club are allowed to make mistakes, but now they both have to reflect. Addressing and solving such difficulties is better than going somewhere else.”"
Moukoko was limited to just 482 minutes of playing time across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund last season. But that was also because of the number of injury problems that he had to deal with over the course of the campaign. The 17 year old scored two goals and registered two assists in 22 first-team appearances last season.
Youssoufa Moukoko is currently preparing for the start of the new season with Borussia Dortmund. The Germany U-21s international has featured in both of the Black and Yellows’ pre-season games so far. But with less than three weeks to go before the start of the season, it still remains to be seen what the future holds for him.
