Borussia Dortmund are set to face Turkish side Antalyaspor in a friendly on July 30th as part of their pre-season preparations, which will herald the return of club legend Nuri Şahin in his capacity as manager of the Turkish side.

One of Borussia Dortmund’s former stars is set to make a temporary return at the end of July. Nuri Şahin is set to manage his current side Antalyaspor against his boyhood club in a pre-season friendly. The player himself is very excited for reunion with his former side, stating that he “can’t wait to come back home” on Twitter.

Şahin was a crowd favorite in Jürgen Klopp’s 2011 Bundesliga winning Dortmund side. His performances were so good that he was swooped up by Real Madrid and made his return to Dortmund in 2013.

The former Dortmund midfielder took charge of Antalyaspor in October of 2021, with his contract set to run until 2026. Since being appointed, he has been at the helm for 36 games with an average of 1.75 points per match.

While the prospect of this reunion will likely have both Şahin and the fans excited, it may certainly not be the last. Şahin himself has very much expressed that he would like to coach Borussia Dortmund one day:

Of course I have goals and dreams. I’m a BVB fan and a very big fan at that. If God gives me the opportunity, I would like to experience the Yellow Wall as a coach there. That is my great wish.” Nuri Şahin, Spor Arena

Şahin may certainly have some grand aspirations, but should he perform well in his new role as a manager and continue to grow in that capacity, there is no reason why they can’t come to fruition. If he is able to show that he is a capable and innovative manager, then having a person who is so invested in the club is indeed something the club should strive for.

Even now, with the appointment of Edin Terzić, the BVB bosses have shown that they value individuals who have a close connection with the club and find them to be far stronger candidates to lead the club forward into the future. Perhaps one day we will see Şahin in BVB colors once again, this time helping elevate and teach the next generation of talent the club will have at their disposal.
