Nico Schlotterbeck really enjoyed playing in front of the Yellow Wall for the first time as a Borussia Dortmund player on Saturday. And he was even more pleased to end the evening with a win.

Borussia Dortmund marked the start of their Bundesliga campaign with a hard fought 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. For new signing Nico Schlotterbeck, it was an evening to remember for a number of reasons. The defender was making his home debut for the Black and Yellows, and he marked the occasion by helping his side keep a clean sheet.

Schlotterbeck said after the game that he had been looking forward to playing in front of the Yellow Wall for a long time.

"“A clean sheet and a victory: I hope it continues like this. We put on a lot of pressure in the first half, and then things got a little sluggish in the second half. But you also have to say: Leverkusen are a really good team. They played well and made life difficult for us. We spent most of the second half defending.”“I’ve been looking forward to this game in front of the Yellow Wall for an awfully long time.  It felt like I imagined it would – and to round it off with a win makes it even nicer.”“I think this is what you work towards as a footballer. The whole way through the academy to play in a stadium like this. This is also why I decided to join Borussia Dortmund because the fans here are behind you like crazy.”"

Schlotterbeck was one of Borussia Dortmund’s top performers on Saturday. He made a number of crucial defensive recoveries as Edin Terzic’s side managed to keep the dangerous Bayer Leverkusen attackers at bay for large periods of the game. And when Leverkusen did find their way past the BVB defenders, Gregor Kobel stood firm to deny them.

Borussia Dortmund had to wait until matchday ten for their first clean sheet in the Bundesliga last season. So the fact that they were able to stop one of the best attacking teams from scoring on Saturday is certainly an encouraging sign.

Up next for Borussia Dortmund is a trip to Nico Schlotterbeck’s old club SC Freiburg. Christian Streich’s side have proven to be a stumbling block for BVB on a number of occasions in recent seasons. And following their 4-0 win over FC Augsburg on Saturday, Freiburg will certainly offer BVB with a tough test next week.
