Report: Manuel Akanji could extend Borussia Dortmund contract and join Inter Milan on loan

Inter Milan are interested in signing Manuel Akanji, and the defender could extend his Borussia Dortmund contract before signing for the Italian side on an initial loan deal.
Borussia Dortmund want to sell Manuel Akanji this summer, and the defender is said to be attracting the interest of Inter Milan. But the Switzerland international could prove to be too expensive for the Italian side, and so now a new solution is now being proposed.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting the idea of Manuel Akanji extending his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2024, and then joining Inter Milan on an initial loan deal with an option/obligation to buy at the end of the season. It remains to be seen if the BVB bosses would be willing to accept this scenario.
But with less than one year left on the 27 year old’s current contract, the Black and Yellows would risk losing him on a free transfer next summer if an agreement with another club cannot be reached in the coming weeks.
Akanji, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Swiss club FC Basel in 2018, previously rejected the club’s offer to extend his contract as he is looking for a new challenge. He has been frozen out of the team for now, with both the club and the player hoping that a solution can be found before the end of the transfer window.
Borussia Dortmund have already prepared for Manuel Akanji’s departure by bolstering their defence with the signings of Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle.
