Borussia Dortmund let a two goal lead slip in the final few minutes of the game as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Werder Bremen.

Eighty eight minutes in and Borussia Dortmund appeared to be heading towards an underserved 2-0 win at home to Werder Bremen. But the Black and Yellows completely fell apart in stoppage time and somehow ended up losing the game 3-2.

It was a gutless performance from Borussia Dortmund, who were second best for the majority of the game. Despite that, they seemed to have the game very much in the bag courtesy of long-range efforts from Julian Brandt and Raphael Guerreiro.

But they took their foot off the pedal late on, and Werder Bremen managed to pull off an unbelievable yet well deserved comeback win. Lee Buchanan halved the deficit in the 89th minute, before Niklas Schmidt headed home the equaliser four minutes later. Oliver Burke then stepped up to score the winner in the 95th minute to give the newly promoted side a stunning 3-2 victory.

Edin Terzic made two changes to the team that beat SC Freiburg last week, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julian Brandt coming into the starting XI. Niklas Süle and Gio Reyna made their returns to the squad after recovering from their respective injuries.

Borussia Dortmund struggled to get out of the first gear for much of the opening 45 minutes. Edin Terzic’s side were clumsy in possession and looked laboured when going forward. But they got their lucky break on the stroke of half time as Julian Brandt found the bottom corner with a fine finish from the edge of the box. The goal came out of nowhere, but it gave the Black and Yellows the all-important lead going into the break.

The second half was more of the same, with Werder Bremen looking the better of the two teams. Borussia Dortmund seemed to be lacking conviction in all areas of the pitch. But they still managed to double their lead, with Raphael Guerreiro finding the back of the net with a stunning finish 13 minutes from time.

No one could have predicted what happened next, however. It appeared that Borussia Dortmund would be continuing their impressive start to the season as the game headed towards its conclusion. But Werder Bremen spoiled their party with three goals in seven minutes.

Lee Buchanan made it 2-1 in the 89th minute with an excellent finish from the outside of his boot, before Niklas Schmidt scored the equaliser after taking advantage of some woeful Borussia Dortmund defending. But the damage wasn’t even fully done yet, as more poor defending allowed Oliver Burke to stun the home crowd in the 95th minute and hand BVB their first defeat of the season.

The result comes as a reality check for Borussia Dortmund, who simply did not show up for the game. The BVB players looked to be off the pace right from the get go, and Edin Terzic will know that there is plenty of work to be done before next weekend’s trip to Hertha Berlin.
