Gio Reyna makes his eagerly awaited return from injury

Another silver lining for Borussia Dortmund will be the return of Gio Reyna. The USMNT star suffered from a lengthy injury layoff last season, but now seems fully recovered and ready to go.

Gio’s first moments on the pitch since his return were promising as well. The player looked very lively, cutting into the middle of the pitch and trying to create opportunities for his teammates.

Within minutes, he found himself driving past Bremen’s players and motoring towards the final third. A deft chip on his end didn’t yield any end product, but the initiative to jump right into the game and try to have a creative impact was a welcome sight.

Reyna’s return will help bolster the creativity in midfield, and give Edin Terzić options should he wish to have certain players take a step back. Gio provides the team with yet another imaginative outlet that could help piece together the passes they’ve been ailing to capitalize on in the final third.

Final thoughts

Overall, when taking this match in as a whole, there is not much more to say besides the fact that it was a disappointing result. The game was in Borussia Dortmund’s hands despite their performance, and seeing games like this out is critical to mounting a title challenge.

The only acceptable way to look at this game looking forward from the team’s perspective is to use it as motivation to improve and go on a lengthy run of good results that display a heightened attention to focusing on maintaining a lead and piecing together passes with more care and precision.

BVB will get their next opportunity to do this against Hertha Berlin away from home. The Berliners have yet to win a single game so far this season, so with the appropriate attention to detail and graft, Dortmund should, and in reality must, come up with a win lest they wish to slip further behind in the table.

In previous seasons the club has been given the benefit of the doubt early in the season, but these  games are so very important in terms of forming a culture of winning that can shape the season. The pieces are there for Borussia Dortmund to put together a string of strong results. It will be up to Edin Terzić to light the spark with his side to make it a reality.
