A real gut punch

The final whistle was music to the ears of the away side, and the packed Signal Iduna Park was left in utter shock. The blank stare on the face of Eden Terzic was telling. What words could really be said? Where to begin?

The result leaves the head coach with many unanswered questions and seemingly few solutions. One of those solutions was unavailable in the form of new signing Salih Özcan. This was a game, or rather a 6-minute period, that was tailor-made for him.

It was an end-of-game scenario that demanded selfless resiliency and focus to see the game out. To lock up a win like that makes the world of a difference when your professed ambition is to dethrone perennial champions Bayern Munich at long last.

BVB demonstrated none of those qualities. Rather, it highlighted the need for a continued roster overhaul. Sebastian Kehl will be happy with the signings he has brought in but will have to address the obvious weaknesses of the side, with right-back being a particular problem.

After a fantastic run of results with Terzic at the helm, he is now faced with his real challenge. He must work to reconfigure the collective mindset of the team and establish the necessary backbone.

It will have to come quickly as Borussia Dortmund face an unforgiving league schedule over the next few weeks in the likes of Hoffenheim, Leipzig, and a renewed instalment of the Rivierderby before welcoming title holders Bayern to the Westfalenstadion in early October.
