Six reasons why Borussia Dortmund should consider switching to a back three
Borussia Dortmund’s start to the season has been rather unstable. The results might not attest to this statement as they have managed four wins, and one loss. However, football is not only about the results but also about the performances and the future perspectives this team can offer.
The defeat to Bremen is a primary example of how bumpy Borussia Dortmund’s performances have been at the start of the season. Allowing an opponent to come back from a game that was pretty much in the bag is unacceptable. As we are used to saying from where I come from, BVB have had more luck than competence in these first few games.
Even considering the first three Bundesliga wins of the season, if Kobel wasn’t there, the outcome of those games would have been different. More specifically, the team is having problems maintaining defensive consistency, which is not breaking news for fans.
The additions of Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle during the off-season were hopeful signs that the club was building a new back-line. However, that structure has some significant cracks that need to be fixed. Though it is just the beginning of the season, Dortmund cannot afford to commit the same mistakes from the previous forays into the league at the cost of easily dropped points, because we know Bayern Munich will not allow a large margin for error.
To find a solution to this defensive issue, which seems more like a curse since the end of the Golden Era of Hummels and Subotić in their primes, here are a few reasons why Edin Terzic should consider switching to a back three system.
