Gives more space for the forwards to support the build-up

The back three system not only supports the full-backs defensively, but also allows them to drive forward more often. Guerreiro and Meunier were not exactly born to defend at a high level during a whole season. Still, they can be considered above-average at driving up the pitch and creating chances, especially the Portuguese international.

With the back three giving a solid base to Gregor Kobel, this tactical disposition would allow the wide defenders to create even more opportunities than usual. Borussia Dortmund like to attack from the flanks and set up chances for Anthony Modeste. However, the players at times struggle to find space to penetrate the opposition box as teams look to defend deep against Borussia Dortmund.

With Guerreiro and Meunier having fewer defensive responsibilities, it would provide them with more opportunities to support their teammates offensively without overexposing the defense.
