Manuel Akanji is set to complete a shock move to Manchester City, with reports claiming that a deal will be struck for a fee of around 17.5 million euros.

Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement over the transfer of Manuel Akanji. This is being reported by the Athletic, who add that negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing and there is optimism that an agreement will be reached for a fee of around 17.5 million euros.

Akanji told Borussia Dortmund earlier this year that he will not be signing a contract extension with the club, as he is looking for a new challenge.

The central defender has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months, including Manchester United, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Juventus. Now it looks like he will make the surprise move to Manchester City before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Borussia Dortmund made the decision to sign Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle after becoming aware of Akanji’s desire to leave the club. And the Switzerland international was frozen out of the team, as the BVB bosses were keen to sell him this summer with just one year left on his contract.

If the move goes through, Manuel Akanji will reunite with former Borussia Dortmund teammates Erling Haaland and Sergio Gomez who joined Manchester City earlier this summer. He could also face the Black and Yellows next month when the two sides go head to head in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
