Borussia Dortmund ruin Schalke’s title dream

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Schalke (12 May, 2007)

This game will always hold fond memories to all Borussia Dortmund supporters. The Black and Yellows had endured a disappointing season and were languishing in ninth place, while Schalke were one point clear at the top of the table heading into the penultimate weekend of the season. History awaited the Royal Blues as they chased their first league title since 1958. But Thomas Doll’s Borussia Dortmund had other plans.

Alexander Frei gave Borussia Dortmund the lead in the first half, before Edi Smolarek fired home their second in the 85th minute to seal an incredible victory. The result saw Stuttgart overtake Schalke and clinch the Bundesliga crown on the final day of the season.

On the final matchday, Borussia Dortmund fans flew a plane with a sign that said “ein leben lang keine schale in der hand” (A lifetime without your hands on the trophy).

Even though it was largely a season to forget for Borussia Dortmund, denying Schalke the chance of winning the Bundesliga title made it one of the most memorable derbies in the club’s history.
