Borussia Dortmund pull off stunning comeback

Borussia Dortmund 3-3 Schalke (13 September, 2008)

Jürgen Klopp, in his first derby as Borussia Dortmund head coach, saw his side slip to a three goal lead after 54 minutes at home to Schalke. The Royal Blues were seemingly cruising to victory thanks to goals from Jefferson Farfan, Rafinha and Heiko Westermann.

But Alexander Frei, who came on as a half time substitute for the injured Nelson Valdez had other ideas. The Swiss striker created the Black and Yellows’ first goal as his corner was brilliantly headed home by Neven Subotic. He then turned from provider to scorer with a stunning strike from 20 yards out.

Dortmund were then awarded a penalty in the 89th minute when Mladen Krstajic handled the ball inside the box. Frei stepped up again and slotted home an improbable equaliser for his side.

It was one of the best individual performances witnessed at the Westfalenstadion, and Frei called it “one of the best games of my career” later.
