Shinji Kagawa makes his mark

Schalke 1-3 Borussia Dortmund (19 September, 2010)

Shinji Kagawa is now one of the most universally loved Borussia Dortmund players of all time. But back when he arrived from the Japanese second division in 2010, he was very much an unknown commodity.

“We will win and I will score two goals,” Kagawa said five days before his very first Revierderby. And the then 21 year old certainly made good on his promise as he struck twice to help Borussia Dortmund secure a 3-1 win over their fierce rivals.

His first goal was a thing of beauty as he shook off three defenders before curling a deflected shot past Manuel Neuer. Kagawa then tapped home his second after getting on the end of Jakub Blaszczykowski’s cross.

Schalke had Nicolas Plestan sent off before Robert Lewandowski made it 3-0 for Borussia Dortmund. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled a goal back for Schalke, but it was the Black and Yellows who celebrated a well deserved victory at the Veltins Arena.

That match made Shinji Kagawa an instant fan favorite, a status which he enjoys even now.
