Weidenfeller masterclass helps Borussia Dortmund end Schalke’s streak

Schalke 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (May 13, 2005)

Borussia Dortmund went into the 125th Revierderby having failed to beat Schalke in their last 12 attempts. So the pressure was on Bert van Marwijk’s side to end the seven year winless run.

The Black and Yellows started well and took the lead through Sebastian Kehl, who headed home from Tomas Rosicky’s corner. Their lead lasted for just two minutes though, as Tomasz Waldoch nodded home Schalke’s equaliser. Schalke started to dominate after making it 1-1, but were unable to beat the imperious Roman Weidenfeller.

Borussia Dortmund took full advantage of this and took the lead in the 43rd minute through Lars Ricken.

In the second half, Schalke continued to press forward and look for an equaliser, but they were unable to beat the wall that was Roman Weidenfeller. The Dortmund legend made a string of superb saves to help his side earn a priceless win over their local rivals.
