Mateu Morey had to undergo surgery on the lateral meniscus of his left knee on Tuesday and will now be sidelined for the next few months.

Mateu Morey has suffered another injury blow, with Borussia Dortmund confirming that he will be out of action for the next few months due to an injury on his left knee. Edin Terzic revealed during his press conference ahead of BVB’s game against TSG Hoffenheim that the right-back underwent meniscus surgery on Tuesday.

"“Unfortunately, Mateu will not be available to us for an extended period. He had to undergo an operation on the lateral meniscus of his left knee on Tuesday. As a result, we will have to make do without him for the next few months. Of course, this hurts us a lot. He has been fighting very hard for the past 15 months. But he’s showing his fighting spirit again.”"

Morey was previously forced to spend more than one year on the sidelines after injuring the lateral collateral, capsular and anterior cruciate ligaments on his right knee in May 2021. He had to undergo two surgeries and months of rehab. He made his return to training in May, and the hope was that he would be able to play a role for the first-team this season. But now he faces another significant spell on the sidelines.

The news comes just two weeks after Morey made his first competitive appearance in 468 days. The 22 year old featured for the first-team in the pre-season friendly against Antalyaspor last month, and also played 45 minutes for the Borussia Dortmund U-23s against Rot-Weiss Essen in the 3. Liga two weeks ago.

Mateu Morey is rated very highly at Borussia Dortmund, and the hope will be that he can come back stronger from this setback. The former FC Barcelona youth academy graduate has made a total of 29 appearances for the Black and Yellows since joining the club in 2019.
