Borussia Dortmund blow 3-0 lead (BVB 3-3 TSG / 2018-19 Season)

Borussia Dortmund fans vividly remember the 2018-19 season for a variety of reasons. A few of them may recall it for the 4-0 thrashing of Atlético Madrid or the 7-0 whooping of 1. FC Nürnberg. But the vast majority know it as the season where Bayern’s hegemony could have ended if not for Borussia Dortmund’s total collapse in the second half of the season.

The Black and Yellows were the leaders of the Bundesliga for a total of 21 matchdays, even enjoying a 9-point lead over the Bavarians for a stretch of games. The end result was soul crushing. Bayern were crowned champions with 78 points while BVB ended as runners-up with 76 points. One more win would have been enough for Dortmund to clinch the title. That one win that was needed was snatched away by none other than TSG Hoffenheim.

Borussia Dortmund entered the 21st matchday of the Bundesliga as league leaders. Edin Terzic assumed command of the squad alongside Manfred Stefes after Lucien Favre fell ill. The team itself had been playing fantastic football throughout the entire campaign. Imposing, high tempo, attractive and most importantly, effective.

Jadon Sancho was enjoying his breakthrough season so it came as no surprise when he scored the first goal of the game. Mario Götze and Raphaël Guerreiro then scored to make it a comfortable 3-0 lead after 67 minutes.

For a while, it seemed like everything was under complete control for BVB. The visitors finally found the back of the net in the 75th minute after Abdou Diallo failed to clear a routine cross, giving the ball away to Ishak Belfodil who made no mistake from close range. Pavel Kaderabek headed the second one in without trouble as Achraf Hakimi failed to track his run. The worst nightmare then came true when Hakimi lost Belfodil on a free kick, allowing him to score the equalizer with three minutes left. The referee blew the whistle not long after and Dortmund dropped two massive points in the title race.

The result paved the way for Borussia Dortmund’s eventual downfall. Three points that day would have made a big difference at the end of the season. Unfortunately, we are left with nothing but to think: “What if?”.
