F.C. Copenhagen is the final adversary of the group stage. This team is the perfect allusion to the fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling”, which ironically origins from the famous story written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. This novel describes Copenhagen’s situation in Group G as the “ugly duckling” between the fancy gooses of Man. City, Sevilla, and Dortmund.

In the playoff qualifier for the group stage, the current Danish champions beat the Turkish side Trabzonspor on the first leg at home 2-1. On the second leg, the Lions kept the scoreboard even with no goals to guarantee their place in the Champions League groups. It is the first time F.C. Copenhagen had qualified for the group stage since 2016/2017, having their best campaign in 2010-2011 when they reached the round of 16.

The Danish Superliga just started, and F.C. Copenhagen finds itself in the fifth position with 12 points. The main threat is probably the 30-year-old left winger Viktor Claesson who scored six goals and has one assist in the first eight Superliga matches. The Danish star also scored during the Champions League playoff against Trabzonspor.

The good news for Dortmund is the departure of the Spanish attacking midfielder Pep Biel to Olympiacos F.C. He was one of the protagonists from the previous campaign. In his stead, the club have acquired Australian keeper Matt Ryan, who made an impact in the UCL playoffs, and the Danish international Andreas Cornelius, who has bolstered the Danish side’s attack.

The team from the Danish capital usually plays in a traditional 4-3-3 and might have some bright moments, but it should not offer much resistance to Borussia Dortmund in the group. Of course, anything can happen in football. However, Dortmund has an opportunity to start this European run in a nice style against the Danes. On Tuesday, 6:45 PM, BVB will try to erase the specter of the past Champions League run at the Signal Iduna Park.
