Erling Haaland scored the winning goal late on as Borussia Dortmund fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund were handed a 2-1 defeat by Manchester City on matchday two of the UEFA Champions League group stage, with Erling Haaland scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute. The Black and Yellows delivered a largely solid and disciplined performance, and managed to take the lead in the second half through Jude Bellingham. But they were undone by two fantastic late goals.

Edin Terzic made a number of changes to the team that lost to RB Leipzig at the weekend. Mats Hummels came into the team for Nico Schlotterbeck, who missed out due to back problems. While Gio Reyna made his first start since April. Former Borussia Dortmund trio Ilkay Gündogan, Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji all started for Manchester City.

Borussia Dortmund sat deep and allowed Manchester City to enjoy the majority of possession. And that worked to great effect in the first half, as they managed to nullify Pep Guardiola’s side. The Black and Yellows had a few encouraging moments going forward on the counter attack, but neither team was able to create a real chance in what was a cagey first half.

Mats Hummels and Niklas Süle managed to keep Haaland at bay, as City failed to get a shot on target in the first half.

Borussia Dortmund came out for the second half with much more belief and looked to venture forward more often. And they got their reward in the 56th minute when Jude Bellingham opened the scoring. The England international got on the end of Marco Reus’ cross after a corner, and turned the ball into the back of the net to leave the home side stunned.

Manchester City responded by making three attacking changes, but Borussia Dortmund appeared to have a response to everything that was thrown at their goal. That changed out of nowhere in the 80th minute when a thunderbolt from John Stones beat Alexander Meyer and brought the Premier League champions on level terms.

The equaliser gave Manchester City all the momentum they needed to go on and win the game. And Haaland then scored the winning goal just four minutes later with a stunning acrobatic finish.

The Norwegian international continued his incredible start to the season by handing his former club a rather underserved defeat. There wasn’t a whole lot to separate the two teams, and Edin Terzic’s side showed great resolve for much of the 90 minutes. But the fine margins and two moments of brilliance helped Manchester City get the three points in the end.
