Borussia Dortmund internationals: Jude Bellingham, Niklas Süle suffer disappointing defeats
Borussia Dortmund duo Jude Bellingham and Niklas Süle suffered defeats in the UEFA Nations League on Friday evening, as England were relegated and Germany failed to make the finals.
Jude Bellingham started for England as they went up against Italy in the UEFA Nations League Group A3. Needing a win to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation, the Three Lions fell to a 1-0 defeat with Giacomo Raspadori scoring the winner in the second half.
Bellingham impressed in midfield once again, and was one of his team’s top performers. But it was another disappointing performance from Gareth Southgate’s side, who have now gone five games without a win.
The other game in Group A3 saw Hungary continue their impressive run of form and beat Germany 1-0 in Leipzig. Ádám Szalai’s first half strike stunned Germany and ended their hopes of making it to the UEFA Nations League Finals. Niklas Süle played 90 minutes for Hansi Flick’s side, while Nico Schlotterbeck was an unused substitute.
England and Germany are set to face off on the final matchday of the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League group stage on Monday.
Gio Reyna made his first appearance for the United States since April, but wasn’t able to prevent them from suffering a 2-0 defeat to Japan in Düsseldorf. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada opened the scoring for Japan in the first half, before Kaoru Mitoma sealed the win in the 88th minute. The USMNT failed to get a single shot on target.
Germany U-21s also suffered a 1-0 defeat in their friendly against France on Friday, with Amine Gouiri scoring the winning goal. Youssoufa Moukoko and Borussia Dortmund loanee Ansgar Knauff both started for the Germany U-21s.
