Borussia Dortmund player and United States International Gio Reyna was subbed off during the US’s game against Saudi Arabia, prompting worries about the player’s fitness.

Giovanni Reyna is a player quickly becoming synonymous with lengthy injury layoffs. The Borussia Dortmund and US attacking midfielder has already suffered extended stints on the sidelines, most recently last season when he was subbed off in the 28th minute of a game against Borussia Mönchengladbach with a thigh injury. Reyna’s injury woes were exacerbated in April of the very same season where he once again came off the pitch with muscular issues, which would keep him sidelined well into the start of the current campaign.

Today’s game against Saudi Arabia has prompted fears that the player has suffered yet another injury. Reyna was subbed off after just 30 minutes, with the American youngster heading straight down the tunnel. At this point it has been confirmed that the substitution was precautionary by the US national team, with Reyna indeed suffering from muscle tightness at the time.

It is unclear as of yet what the extent of the injury is at this time, however it is a worrying sign for the US national team with the World Cup in Qatar so close at hand. It will also be a worrying development for Borussia Dortmund, who are suffering from another lengthy injury list this season. Reyna’s injury comes as a double blow as captain Marco Reus is also out. Reyna would have been one of the players expected to slot into the side with the Dortmund captain absent for the next 3-4 weeks. Both club and country will be monitoring this situation closely with the hopes that Reyna, if indeed injured, will have as short of a layoff as possible.
