Borussia Dortmund’s current campaign is one that is intriguing on a variety of levels. There are ample layers to unpack when looking at the challenges the club has had to face so far and how these challenges have affected the trajectory of their results.
Life under Edin Terzić started off quite well. Three competitive wins set the tone for BVB, with 5 goals scored and one conceded. Defensively, the team looked rather sturdy. Borussia Dortmund managed to bounce back however, winning another 3 games in a row, the most emphatic of which was a 3-0 win against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. They would then once again seem to capitulate against RB Leipzig, losing 3-0. The performance was additionally humiliating because Leipzig have made a torrid start to the season, and had only just been taken over by former BVB head coach Marco Rose.
Die Schwarzgelben would then face Manchester City in the Champions League, where they would put on a valiant display until the final ten minutes of the game. John Stones would rifle City level after Jude Bellingham’s opener for the Black and Yellows, before Erling Haaland put his former club to the sword with an outrageous finish.
Borussia Dortmund would round off the slew of games prior to the international break with a 1-0 win against Schalke in the Revierderby, the first of which has occurred in some time due to Schalke’s spell in the second tier of German football. It was an important win that saw Youssoufa Moukoko score a dramatic late winner.
Borussia Dortmund’s results so far tell the story of a team that has yet to find its true footballing identity under Edin Terzić. Injuries and ailments continue to bog the team down at every turn, limiting both the quantity and calibre of personnel at Terzic’s disposal. This topsy-turvy start has however at least highlighted which players will be key towards success later down the road this season, as well as pointed towards perhaps the type of play the team should strive for and perhaps stay away from, even in the short term.
