Now in the middle of the first international break of the 2022/23 season, we take a look at Marco Reus, and his importance to the team so far this campaign.

When I first had the idea to write this article, Borussia Dortmund’s centerpiece Marco Reus was in superb form and was helping guide the Black and Yellows to a mighty fine start to the season. Reus had racked up three goals and another four assists, having played nearly every minute of BVB’s ten games to start the season.

But of course, tragedy struck in the Revierderby against Schalke on matchday seven. Reus was stretchered off the field in the 32nd minute with what looked like a pretty nasty ankle injury.

Thankfully, the departure of Reus didn’t seem to immediately impact the performance on the pitch, with BVB getting the 1-0 win over their bitter rivals. The team even went as far as dedicating the win to their Kapitän.

Borussia Dortmund has received quite a break as now it is being reported that Reus’ ankle injury is not quite as serious as once thought. The BVB talisman is set to miss only three to four weeks, and is not in danger of missing the World Cup.

With all that being said, one can’t help but wonder just how much of an impact this injury to Marco Reus could have on the team. Seeing yet another player go down with an injury has to be absolutely demoralizing for the players and fans, but it surely has to be worse when it is the team captain. Adding to that is the fact that this is not the first, nor second, nor even the third time that we’ve seen Reus go down with a significant injury.

Marco Reus has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most important players this season. Most fans know of his offensive capabilities, but he has gone a step further this year by being a stalwart on the defensive end as well. Marco does everything well, and his absence, no matter how short it might be, will be extremely tough to cope with.
