Marco Reus: Analyzing the Borussia Dortmund captain’s importance to the team
By Luke Hinkle
Final Thoughts
One can’t help but wonder what might have been had Marco Reus managed to stay healthy throughout his career. With a player who has time and again shown so much loyalty to the Black and Yellow crest, the past several seasons might have looked very different for Borussia Dortmund in terms of overall team success.
What we are seeing out of Marco Reus is a player who, despite those previous injuries, is someone who can still carry a team through his play-style and leadership. To say that Reus is an important player to Borussia Dortmund is a massive understatement. No one denies that football is a team sport, but having players like Marco Reus in your side is what makes the difference when it comes to winning.
Borussia Dortmund will be relieved to welcome their captain back in a few weeks’ time, grateful that what could have been – and probably should have been – a serious injury looks to have turned out to be something rather minor.
Until he returns, however, Borussia Dortmund will be hard-pressed to finding a replacement capable of bringing to the pitch the same things that Marco Reus does. Sure, the team has several extremely talented players capable of playing in his role; Gio Reyna or Julian Brandt are two options, but neither is better suited for that position than Marco Reus.
