Bundesliga Roundup: Bayern roar back to winning ways; Borussia Dortmund blow lead against Köln
Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in convincing fashion on matchday eight of the Bundesliga season. But Borussia Dortmund and league leaders Union Berlin had a weekend to forget.
Matchday eight of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season is in the books, and the battle at the top of the standings is starting to heat up. Bayern Munich ended their run of four games without a win in the Bundesliga on Friday with a 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen. Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mané, and Thomas Müller were all on target for Julian Nagelsmann’s side as they cruised to a big win.
Borussia Dortmund let a lead slip yet again, as they suffered a 3-2 defeat away to FC Köln. After going in front through Julian Brandt, the Black and Yellows imploded in the second half. And goals from Florian Kainz, Steffen Tigges and Dejan Ljubičić helped the Billy Goats clinch a stunning win.
League leaders Union Berlin suffered their first league defeat of the season, losing 2-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals from Mario Götze and Jesper Lindstrøm helped the Eagles make it four wins out of five as they moved up to sixth place in the Bundesliga standings.
SC Freiburg held on to claim all three points against Mainz 05, moving up to second place in the process. Michael Gregoritsch and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh scored for Christian Streich’s side, before Aaron Martin halved the deficit for Mainz early in the second half.
Werder Bremen continued their impressive start to the season by claiming an incredible 5-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Niclas Füllkrug scored a brace for Ole Werdner’s side, while Marvin Ducksch and Mitchell Weiser also found the net. Marcus Thuram scored a consolation goal for Gladbach.
RB Leipzig eased some pressure on Marco Rose by dispatching VfL Bochum 4-0. Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku both scored two goals each, as Leipzig moved up to 11th place in the table.
VfL Wolfsburg got the better of VfB Stuttgart in what was a topsy-turvy contest, with Yannick Gerhardt scoring the winner in the 91st minute. Stuttgart took the lead in the first half through Serhou Guirassy, only for Omar Marmoush to equalise a minute later. Maximilian Arnold then gave Wolfsburg the lead, before Konstantinos Mavropanos made it 2-2 on the stroke of half time. Gerhardt then scored a dramatic late winner for the Wolves, sealing a vital 3-2 victory.
FC Augsburg got their third win on the trot, as they beat Schalke 04 3-2 despite finishing the game with ten men. The Bavarians appeared to be on course for a comfortable win when a brace from Ermedin Demirovic gave them an early two goal lead. But Schalke got themselves back into the game thanks to goals from Simon Terodde and Tom Krauß.
Augsburg then went down to ten men after Mergim Berisha was sent off. But Andre Hahn headed home in the 77th minute to give Enrico Maaßen’s a crucial win.
TSG Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin played out a 1-1 draw with Dodi Lukebakio canceling out Andrej Kramaric’s opener.
