Borussia Dortmund left it very late as they came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.

Der Klassiker lived up to its billing once again as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich shared the spoils in a pulsating contest. The Black and Yellows looked to be down and out after Bayern took a two goal lead thanks Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané.

But Youssoufa Moukoko halved the deficit for Edin Terzic’s side with 15 minutes to go, before Anthony Modeste scored a last gasp equaliser to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Edin Terzic made two changes to the team that beat Sevilla on Wednesday, with Mats Hummels coming into the team for Thomas Meunier and Donyell Malen replacing Karim Adeyemi. Youssoufa Moukoko started up front once again on the back of his impressive performance in Seville.

Borussia Dortmund were the better team for much of the first half, with Bayern happy to sit back and look for counter attacking opportunities. Both teams were happy to get stuck in and four yellow cards were handed out in the first half alone.

Despite Borussia Dortmund’s strong first half performance, it was Bayern Munich who went into the break with a narrow lead after Leon Goretzka found the bottom corner with a fine finish from the edge of the box. The BVB players were caught ball watching, which gave Goretzka space and time to fire his shot and make it 1-0 for Bayern.

Bayern Munich came out of the blocks quickly for the second half, and they managed to double their lead in the 53rd minute. Leroy Sané’s shot from distance was parried into the net by Alexander Meyer, and the feeling of the inevitable started to grow at the Signal Iduna Park.

But Borussia Dortmund did not give up and forced their way back into the game. Anthony Modeste came off the bench and set up Youssoufa Moukoko, who found the back of the net to halve the deficit and become the youngest goalscorer in this fixture’s history.

Modeste then had a golden chance to equalise in the 83rd minute, but he failed to beat Manuel Neuer from point blank range. With 94 minutes on the clock, it looked like it was going to be so close yet so far once again for Borussia Dortmund.

But Edin Terzic’s side did not give up, and their reward finally arrived in the 95th minute when Modeste turned Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross into the back of the net to send the Signal Iduna Park into raptures. The striker, who has been the subject of a lot of criticism in recent weeks, came up with a massive goal to rescue a vital point for his side.

The draw will certainly feel like a win for Borussia Dortmund, who appeared to be sinking after Bayern scored their second goal. It was a truly special comeback, and the game further illustrated the progress the team is making under Edin Terzic. BVB will now look to build on this performance in the coming weeks, starting with their UEFA Champions League clash against Sevilla on Tuesday.
