Jude Bellingham scores again to rescue point for Borussia Dortmund against Sevilla
Borussia Dortmund will have to wait to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sevilla on Tuesday.
Jude Bellingham was on target once again but Borussia Dortmund could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening. It was a lacklustre performance from the Black and Yellows, who did not create much in terms of chances over the course of the 90 minutes.
The result means that Borussia Dortmund still need a point from their final two games to qualify for the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Edin Terzic made a number of changes to the side that earned a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich on Saturday. Anthony Modeste came into the starting XI following his last gasp goal against Bayern, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Raphael Guerreiro were given a rest.
Thomas Meunier and Gregor Kobel also returned to the starting XI, while 17 year old Tom Rothe made his first start in the UEFA Champions League.
Borussia Dortmund made a slow start to the game, and Sevilla took full advantage. Former Bayern Munich defender Tanguy Nianzou headed the ball home from a free-kick to give his side the lead in the 18th minute.
BVB found it hard to get going in the first half, but they did manage to find an equaliser ten minutes before the break. And it was Jude Bellingham who made it 1-1 after getting on the end of Thomas Meunier’s cross and finding the back of the net via a deflection.
The England international’s fourth goal in the UEFA Champions League this season gave Borussia Dortmund a massive lifeline. But they weren’t able to make the most of it, despite being spurred on by a vociferous crowd at the Signal Iduna Park.
Mats Hummels and Niklas Süle both had chances to score in the second half for Borussia Dortmund. But in the end, Dortmund had to thank Gregor Kobel after the goalkeeper made an incredible save from point-blank range to prevent Erik Lamela from scoring.
Neither side was able to find a winner, and the game ended all square. The result will certainly be a frustrating one for Borussia Dortmund, who missed out on the opportunity to qualify for the round of 16 with two games to spare. Next up for Edin Terzic’s side is a trip to the German capital to take on league leaders Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
