UEFA Champions League permutations: What Borussia Dortmund need to qualify for the round of 16
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are well placed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League round of 16 despite their 1-1 draw against Sevilla on Tuesday evening.
There are just two games left in the UEFA Champions League group stage, and the race to qualify for the knockout rounds is set to intensify in the coming weeks. Borussia Dortmund appear to be in an excellent position to make it to the round of 16 despite failing to secure progress on Tuesday.
The Black and Yellows have won two of their four games in the Champions League this season, and are currently second in Group G behind Manchester City (who have already qualified for the round of 16). BVB are on seven points, five points clear of both Sevilla and FC Copenhagen. So a point from their final two games would help them qualify for the round of 16.
Borussia Dortmund will go up against Manchester City in two weeks’ time, with Sevilla taking on FC Copenhagen at home on the same day. BVB will then end their group stage campaign with a trip to FC Copenhagen on November 02.
Borussia Dortmund’s superior head to head record against Sevilla and FC Copenhagen means that they will qualify for the round of 16 even if they lose to Manchester City and only get a point on their trip to Denmark on matchday six.
If Borussia Dortmund get a draw against Manchester City and FC Copenhagen manage to beat Sevilla on matchday five, they would need to avoid losing by more than three goals on matchday six in order to progress to the knockout rounds.
Even if they lose both of their remaining group stage games, Edin Terzic’s side would still qualify to the knockout rounds unless Sevilla or FC Copenhagen manage to take maximum points from their final two matches.
Borussia Dortmund are also in contention to finish first in Group G. But in order to do that, they must beat Manchester City by two or more goals at home on matchday five and then get the better of FC Copenhagen on matchday six.
