Borussia Dortmund planning to hold contract extension talks with Mats Hummels during the winter break
Borussia Dortmund would like to extend the contract of Mats Hummels, and talks over a new deal are set to take place during the winter break.
The contract of Mats Hummels is set to expire at the end of the season, but Borussia Dortmund are planning to offer him an extension. According to BILD, the BVB bosses have been left impressed by the defender’s start to the season. And a contract extension now beckons for the 33 year old.
The tabloid adds that initial talks over a new contract are expected to take place during the winter break, at the latest after next month’s FIFA World Cup. Those in charge at Borussia Dortmund are keen to offer Hummels a new one-year contract, with the option to extend it by a further year.
Mats Hummels has made an excellent start to the current campaign, showing that he is still more than capable of getting the job done in the heart of the Borussia Dortmund defence.
The added competition for places brought by the arrivals of Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle has helped bring the best out of Hummels. And he looks to be back to his best after struggling for form and fitness last season.
Hummels’ performances have even led to calls for Hansi Flick to include him in the Germany squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. And if the 2014 World Cup winner continues to fare as he has done so far this season, it will be very difficult for Flick to look past him.
Mats Hummels, who made a spectacular return to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2019, has made a total of 440 appearances for the club across two spells.
