Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has reiterated his backing for UEFA, amid attempts from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus to resurrect the European Super League.

The European Super League is starting to make waves once again, with the appointment of Bernd Reichart as its new CEO. Reichart is heading the attempts to revive the European Super League and he believes that the revamped tournament could be up and running as early as the 2024/25 season.

But bosses of Bundesliga clubs, including Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, have made it clear that they still have no interest in being part of the proposed project. Watzke told BILD that the Black and Yellows remain committed to UEFA, amid the Super League plans.

"“The Champions League is an absolutely superior format, especially starting from 2024! What’s more, I feel very well looked after by Uefa, as it also has the interests of smaller clubs in mind,” Watzke said. While Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn said, “The attempt to launch a Super League failed miserably a year and a half ago. We have communicated our position clearly time and again since then.”"

Some of Europe’s biggest clubs announced the launch of the breakaway European Super League last year. Clubs from the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A were involved in the project, only for it to collapse within days after receiving widespread criticism from fans, players, and coaches.

Bundesliga clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, rejected the idea of the European Super League when it was initially launched last year. And it looks like their stance will not change anytime soon.

Nine of the 12 clubs backed out of the proposed closed competition after receiving backlash from supporters. But Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have not given up yet and are still trying to turn this project into a reality. It remains to be seen if they will succeed in their attempts to revive this breakaway league.
