Bundesliga clubs in Europe: RB Leipzig stun Real Madrid; Eintracht Frankfurt claim crucial win

Matchday five was a memorable one for Bundesliga clubs in Europe, as Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig both claimed crucial wins and Borussia Dortmund held Manchester City to a draw.

Eintracht Frankfurt remain in contention to qualify for the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after earning a 2-1 win over Olympique Marseille. Daichi Kamada and Randal Kolo Muani were on target for the Eagles as they claimed a priceless win at home. They now need to beat Sporting Lisbon in Portugal next week to qualify for the round of 16.

RB Leipzig handed defending champions Real Madrid their first defeat of the season, as goals from Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner helped them clinch a 3-2 win. Marco Rose’s side now need a point against Shakhtar Donetsk next week to make it through to the round of 16.

A dogged defensive performance helped Borussia Dortmund hold Manchester City to a goalless draw on Tuesday. The result helped the Black and Yellows seal their place in the Champions League round of 16.

There was late drama as Bayer Leverkusen held Atletico Madrid to a 2-2 draw. Xabi Alonso’s side twice took the lead, only for Atletico Madrid to equalise on both occasions. The Spanish side was awarded a penalty after the final whistle was blown thanks to a VAR check. But Lukas Hradecky saved Yannick Carrasco’s penalty, before the rebounded effort hit the crossbar.

Both teams have been eliminated from round of 16 contention, and will now fight for a place in the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-offs next week.

Bayern Munich secured top spot in their group after cruising to a 3-0 win over FC Barcelona. Sadio Mané, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard were all on target for the Bavarians, as Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League.

SC Freiburg secured top spot in their Europa League group after Lukas Kübler’s 93rd minute equaliser helped them earn a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos.

Union Berlin boosted their hopes of making it to the UEFA Europa League knockout round play-offs. Robin Knoche’s second half penalty helped them claim a 1-0 win at home to SC Braga. Meanwhile, FC Köln beat Czech side Slovácko 1-0 in the UEFA Europa Conference League on Friday after their game was postponed due to heavy fog.
