Borussia Dortmund U-19s reach UEFA Youth League play-offs after dramatic win over Copenhagen
Paris Brunner scored an 87th minute winner as the Borussia Dortmund U-19s claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen on Wednesday to qualify for the UEFA Youth League play-offs.
Borussia Dortmund U-19s qualified for the UEFA Youth League play-offs for the second season in a row after earning a hard fought 1-0 win away to FC Copenhagen on Tuesday afternoon. Highly rated striker Paris Brunner scored an 87th minute winner to give the Black and Yellows a stunning victory.
Needing a win to pip FC Copenhagen and qualify for the knockout stages, the Borussia Dortmund U-19s did not get off to the best of starts. The home team had a couple of really good chances in the early stages of the game and also missed a penalty in the first half.
Mike Tullberg’s side looked a lot more dangerous after the break, and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Still, for much of the second half, it looked like FC Copenhagen would get the point they needed to finish second in Group G and qualify for the play-offs. But Borussia Dortmund kept pushing and finally got their reward with just three minutes to go.
Paris Brunner got on the end of Julian Rijkhoff’s long ball in the 87th minute and sent a looping header into the bottom corner of the net. The 16 year old’s third goal in the UEFA Youth League gave the Borussia Dortmund U-19s a priceless win as they sealed their place in the play-offs.
The draw for the UEFA Youth League play-offs round will take place next week, and Borussia Dortmund U-19s will go up against one of the eight second round winners from the Domestic Champions Path. KRC Genk, AZ Alkmaar, BSC Young Boys and HNK Hajduk Split are among the teams BVB U-19s can face in the next round.
