Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels has been in excellent shape and form this season and has undoubtedly been Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent defender so far. He has rolled back the years with his performances this season. But it still might not be enough to earn a place in Germany’s squad.

Hummels has not played for Germany since the European Championships before Hansi Flick took over. And the former Bayern Munich head coach may opt for players he has called up in the recent past. However, the veteran defender certainly deserves a call-up based on his stunning form this season. And it would be a big shock if he is not in the Germany squad when it is announced on Thursday.

Niklas Süle

Niklas Süle is almost certain to be in the Germany squad for the World Cup. The former Bayern player has assumed a new role at right-back in recent weeks, and has fared a lot better than most expected. And his versatility could make him an even more important player for Hansi Flick at the World Cup.

Nico Schlotterbeck

Nico Schlotterbeck is another BVB defender who will likely have a spot in Germany’s World Cup venture. The young defender has been a regular player in Hansi Flick’s squads in recent months.

And his encouraging start at Borussia Dortmund certainly gives him the credentials to earn his place in the Germany squad for the tournament. It is also quite possible that two BVB defenders may line up as the starting centre-backs for Germany at the World Cup.
