Gregor Kobel

Gregor Kobel is one of the most promising goalkeepers in Europe, but his role in this World Cup is a question mark. The Swiss national team has the figure of Yann Sommer as an unquestionable starter, while Kobel is only the second or third choice for head coach Murat Yakin. There is high competition, with the likes of Yvon Mvogo, Jonas Omlin, and David von Ballmoos also in contention for a spot in the squad.

But Yann Sommer sustained an ankle injury a few weeks ago, putting in doubt his status for the tournament. If Sommer is ruled out, Kobel might have a shot of starting for Switzerland. But he is more likely the future than the present for his country. He is very likely to receive a call-up, but his chances of starting remain unclear for now.

Thomas Meunier

Thomas Meunier is another uncertainty for the World Cup. The Belgian right-back suffered a fractured cheekbone last month and has been ruled out until the World Cup break. If he manages to recover from his injury in time, Meunier will no doubt be on Roberto Martínez’s final squad list as he has been a constant figure in the Belgium squad for many years now.

Thorgan Hazard

It is safe to say that Thorgan Hazard will have a spot in the Belgium squad for the World Cup. Even though he is not a guaranteed starter, Hazard is a constant in Roberto Martínez’s squad lists. His versatility and ability to play as a wing-back makes him a really good option to have in the team. And it will be interesting to see what role he plays for the Red Devils in Qatar.
