Uninspired Borussia Dortmund slump to 2-0 defeat against Wolfsburg
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund’s encouraging run of form came to a crashing halt on Tuesday evening as they were handed a well deserved 2-0 defeat by Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg defeated Borussia Dortmund for the first time since the 2015 DFB-Pokal final, outplaying the Black and Yellows en route to a 2-0 win. Goals from Micky van de Ven and Lukas Nmecha helped Wolfsburg come out on top, as Edin Terzic’s side missed out on the opportunity to close the gap to their title rivals.
It was a very ordinary and uninspired performance from Borussia Dortmund, who were second best from the first whistle to the last. Despite dominating possession, BVB never really looked like scoring. And in the end, it was a well deserved win for the home side.
Edin Terzic made just one change to the team that beat VfL Bochum on Saturday, with Karim Adeyemi coming into the starting XI for Gio Reyna. Youssoufa Moukoko started up front, looking to continue his excellent run of form.
Borussia Dortmund were slow off the blocks and Gregor Kobel had to be alert to deny Omar Marmoush in the third minute. But the Swiss goalkeeper stood no chance in the sixth minute when Micky van de Ven easily got ahead of Niklas Süle and headed the ball home from a corner.
The Black and Yellows responded well to going behind, with Donyell Malen causing a few problems to the Wolfsburg defence. But the home side continued to threaten on the counter attack, and only a goal-line clearance from Raphael Guerreiro prevented them from making it 2-0.
Süle came closest to scoring for Borussia Dortmund in the first half. He fired a shot wide from a corner before hitting the post on the stroke of half time.
The second half was more of the same with Borussia Dortmund dominating possession but Wolfsburg looking dangerous on the counter attack. Gregor Kobel was forced into a number of crucial saves as Wolfsburg outmanoeuvred the BVB defence time and time again.
On the other end of the pitch, Niko Kovac’s side defended with great resolve and managed to keep the BVB players at bay for much of the game. And Lukas Nmecha then sealed the three points for his side in the 91st minute by steering home Patrick Wimmer’s low cross from close range.
The defeat comes as a huge blow for Borussia Dortmund, who have slipped up away from home time and time again in the Bundesliga this season. Up next for Edin Terzic’s side is another tough away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday.
