Borussia Dortmund fell to VFL Wolfsburg at the at the Volkswagen Arena this past Tuesday in a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

Borussia Dortmund’s unfortunate tendency of inconsistent performances this season continued on Tuesday as Die Schwarzgelben visited the Volkswagen Arena for their clash against VFL Wolfsburg, the club’s penultimate competitive game in 2022. Heading into this fixture, BVB had won their last eight games against Wolfsburg, but unfortunately for the Black and Yellows, a 9th win in a row was not meant to be.

Both teams came into this game on the back of significant win streaks in the league, with Wolfsburg having completely turned their season around under Niko Kovač. Dortmund, on their part, had begun to pull together performances where the goals seemed to be coming more frequently. Youssoufa Moukoko has really begun to hit his stride, which has really helped Dortmund improve their scoring output; an aspect of their game that has been well below their usual standards this season.

Wolfsburg started off the game very strongly, putting a stunned BVB side under pressure from the very first minute. They created a slew of chances in the opening minutes from open play but their opening goal would come from a corner, slotted home by Micky van de Ven. Both teams would continue to fight throughout both halves, with Dortmund finding themselves in good positions but lacking the final finish.

In the dying embers of the second half, Wolfsburg striker Lukas Nmecha put the game beyond Borussia Dortmund’s reach despite an additional 6 minutes being added on, crushing any hopes that Edin Terzić’s men would salvage anything from the tie. With this loss only widening the gap between Dortmund and their hopes of a title, let’s take a closer look at some of the key takeaways from the game.
