Germany will have to make do without Marco Reus at the FIFA World Cup after the Borussia Dortmund captain failed to recover in time from his ankle injury.

Marco Reus has been sidelined with an ankle injury for much of the last two months. And he will be forced to miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup as a result. The Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder suffered his injury during the Bundesliga clash against Schalke 04 in September. He has played in two games since then. But the pain in his ankle has not subsided yet.

The news comes as a heartbreaking setback for Reus, as the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the fourth major tournament that he is forced to miss since making his debut for the national team.

Reus had to withdraw from Germany’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup due to injury. He also missed the 2016 European Championships due to injury, and the 2020 European Championships in order to give his body more time to recover after a gruelling season.

Marco Reus made a very strong start to the current season with Borussia Dortmund and was expected to play a crucial role for Germany at the World Cup. But the ankle injury means that he will not be making the trip to Qatar.
