Mats Hummels has said that not being named in Germany’s squad for the FIFA World Cup is one of the bigger disappointments of his career.

Mats Hummels was surprisingly left out of the Germany squad for the FIFA World Cup, with head coach Hansi Flick citing his desire to go with younger players as the reason for the centre-back’s absence. The 33 year old has now reacted to the snub, saying that it is one of the bigger disappointments of his career.

In a post on Instagram, Hummels vowed to respond to this setback by putting in more hard work. “Unsurprisingly, this is one of the bigger disappointments of my career. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the team at the World Cup and use this time to respond to such an experience with hard work, as I have always done.”

The decision to leave Hummels out of the World Cup squad comes as a big surprise, as he has been one of the top performers in the Bundesliga this season. He has set the tone for Borussia Dortmund with his performances in defence, rolling back the years and showing that he is still more than capable of making an impact at the highest level.

Hummels has also outperformed new signings Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle, who have both been called up by Hansi Flick. Antonio Rüdiger, Matthias Ginter, and Armel Bella-Kotchap are the other three centre-backs in the Germany squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Mats Hummels, who has won 76 caps for Germany, helped his country win the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
