Sebastian Kehl: Sixth place in the Bundesliga table a long way from where we want to be
Sebastian Kehl has admitted that Borussia Dortmund are not happy with where they are in the Bundesliga standings going into the winter break.
It has been a very up and down season so far for Borussia Dortmund, who have won eight and lost six of their 15 games in the Bundesliga. The Black and Yellows go into the winter break in sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, nine points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. And Sebastian Kehl has admitted that they have failed to meet their own expectations so far this season.
In an interview after Friday’s 4-2 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director said that they will carefully analyse things in the next few weeks.
"“Losing the last two games is of course unacceptable. We will now spend the winter in sixth place. I don’t have to emphasize again that this is a long way from where we want to be. It’s also clear that this will give us a few uneasy weeks. But of course we’ll analyse the situation relentlessly.”"
Borussia Dortmund have struggled with a lot of the same issues this season that have affected the team so often over the last few years. The fixture congestion certainly hasn’t helped the team’s cause, especially with so many players sidelined due to injuries. And Sebastian Kehl believes that the winter break is coming at the right time for the team.
"“We’ve now played six English weeks in a row with almost the same lineup. We’re hoping that we’ll be able to step up the level of competitiveness and have some more available options [after the winter break]. We need to work on a few things together and improve significantly.”"
The players who have been called up by their respective national teams will now head to Qatar to take part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The rest of the Borussia Dortmund squad will soon also head to Asia to play three mid-season friendly matches.
Borussia Dortmund’s next competitive game is more than two months away, which gives those in charge plenty of time to identify the issues affecting the team and find some solutions.
