Borussia Dortmund have received an uplifting bit of news in terms of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who is set to return to training for Die Schwarzgelben, per Ruhr Nachrichten.

The former Manchester City youth player joined Borussia Dortmund’s under-19s in September of 2020 and formally joined the first team in July of 2022. The young English-born winger enjoyed a very strong start to life in the Bundesliga but suffered a shoulder injury in September’s clash against Hoffenheim, which saw him sidelined for most of the first half of the season.

Bynoe-Gittens return for Dortmund is very much anticipated for two reasons. For one, the player has shown himself to be immensely talented, showing shades of the type of play Jadon Sancho displayed when he first joined the first team setup. The second is far more pressing however, namely, the fact that Dortmund lack options out wide when it comes to natural wingers.

Borussia Dortmund’s options out wide so far have consisted for Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt, Gio Reyna and Thorgan Hazard. Of the players named, only Thorgan Hazard plays predominantly on the wing. Brandt and Reyna are better suited to playing in the center of the pitch, while Malen and Adeyemi have shown that they aren’t as comfortable playing out wide as one would have hoped at the start of the season. Both have previously played in a front two as strikers, which should likely be where head coach Edin Terzić seeks to play them going forward, barring injuries.

The return of Byrne-Gittens to the pitch certainly offers Dortmund far more flexibility in terms of attacking options, and will be a boost for the team after the World Cup and winter break comes to an end. He will add a level of youthful energy and natural wide-play to a side that has struggled to create from the wings all season long.
