Jude Bellingham earned rave reviews following his excellent performance for England in their FIFA World Cup opener against Iran.
England made a dream start to their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign as they cruised to a dominant 6-2 win in their group stage clash against Iran on Monday. Jude Bellingham set the tone for the Three Lions with an excellent performance in the middle of the park.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder ran the show and also gave England the lead with a fine header. He then helped set up England’s third and sixth goal. Bellingham’s goal proved to be the catalyst for Gareth Southgate’s side, as they delivered a statement of intent in their World Cup opener.
Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas heaped praise on Jude Bellingham, saying that the 19 year old is like ‘Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard rolled into one.’
"“Bellingham is a throwback, he can really do it all,” Jenas said. “He is like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard rolled into one. It’s a real bonus for Gareth Southgate to get him now in the form that he is in.”"
Legendary England striker Alan Shearer also lauded Bellingham after the game for delivering a complete performance in midfield. “It was a complete performance from a really exciting player – it had everything, he put in the tackles, the work-rate, his passing was superb, he got his goal, it really was a special day for him.”
Bellingham’s goal against Iran was his first in an England shirt. And it helped him make history as he became England’s second youngest scorer in World Cup history after Michael Owen. He said after the game that his goal was a very proud moment for him.
"“I said I wanted to score more goals for Dortmund and England this year,” Bellingham told BBC. “To be honest, I thought it had missed! Then it took ages to loop into the goal – a really proud moment for me.”"
Jude Bellingham has quickly established himself as a very important player for both club and country, and his performance against Iran once again underlined just how good he is. The BVB star will no doubt have a key role to play in England’s bid to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
