Edin Terzic backs Donyell Malen to end slump after the winter break
Edin Terzic is backing Donyell Malen to find his form again in the coming months after a very underwhelming first half of the season.
Donyell Malen finally ended his goalscoring drought on Thursday as he scored a brace to help Borussia Dortmund earn a 7-2 win over Singapore side Lion City Sailors in the first friendly match as part of their Asia tour. The goals were the Dutchman’s first since late July, and he finally managed to end his long goalscoring drought.
Edin Terzic revealed after the game that the last few weeks have been very difficult for Malen. But the Borussia Dortmund head coach also backed the forward to find his form in the second half of the season.
In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, Terzic said:
"“Donny has incredible skills. When he doesn’t score, he’s very unhappy. That really annoys him, it’s been weighing heavily on his mind in recent weeks.”“We see every day what he can do. We know that he will score again. It’s a question of when it will happen, not if. With more confidence, he will be able to show his quality in a much better way. He knows exactly what I expect from him. We are very honest with each other.”"
Malen has made 17 appearances so far this season for Borussia Dortmund, but has only managed to find the back of the net once. And that goal came in BVB’s first game of the season, against third division side 1860 Munich in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Since then, he has shown glimpses of his quality but has not been able to make a telling impact.
The brace against Lion City Sailors will do Donyell Malen and his confidence a whole lot of good, even though it was just a friendly match. After being left out of the Netherlands’ squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 23 year old will now be determined to find his footing and finally announce his arrival at Borussia Dortmund in the second half of the season.
